The future is now.

Ratz was tending bar, his prosthetic arm jerking monotonously as he filled a tray of glasses with draft Kirin. He saw Case and smiled, his teeth a webwork of East European steel and brown decay. Case found a place at the bar, between the unlikely tan on one of Lonny Zone’s whores and the crisp naval uniform of a tall African whose cheekbones were ridged with precise rows of tribal scars. “Wage was in here early, with two joeboys,” Ratz said, shoving a draft across the bar with his good hand. “Maybe some business with you, Case?”

Case shrugged. The girl to his right giggled and nudged him.

The bartender’s smile widened. His ugliness was the stuff of legend. In an age of affordable beauty, there was something heraldic about his lack of it. The antique arm whined as he reached for another mug. It was a Russian military prosthesis, a seven-function force-feedback manipulator, cased in grubby pink plastic. “You are too much the artiste, Herr Case.” Ratz grunted; the sound served him as laughter. in 1983, William Gibson was one of a few authors who were ushering in a new genre of writing, Cyberpunk was a exploration of post consumer/post modern decadence and the waste it left over.

Sitting on top of an excellent story, was the technology we watched fly across the pages, like the world described to us, it was equally fantastic, and amazingly familiar.

The video linked above brings the future even closer, if not simply proving William Gibson’s current theory, that the future is now.

Something New.

Well, this is new.
I spent the morning picking a new blog theme, cleaning it up, adding my flavor, and upgrading the back end.
We’re now sporting GRID FOCUS from 5thirtyone.com.

Its fresh, lighter, cleaner, easier to read, and I hope the way it structures the posts forces me to write more, instead of just linking in some youtube crap.

As for my plans…
In the second column, you’ll see some links. Right now they’re manually populated, and I hope to get that tied in to my blogroll so its more automated. In the 3rd Column I have the links back to 5thirtyone.com from whence this theme came, and I hope to figure out some new tricks for that area as well. Need to find some clean badges to websites I like… maybe some other fun… Stay tuned.

A company called SARCOS has built an exo-skeleton system with an amazing level of fine grain force-feedback control that allows the user to lift heavy weights, and still move carefuly and safely to do more delicate tasks.

The Appleseed Manga (comicbook) from the 90’s is a big favorate of mine. Its a science fiction setting written and illustrated by Masamune_Shirow. It features a lot of high tech stuff. The most dramatic, and cool part of the comic book is the exo-skeleton armor that the lead characters use.

This picture shows how a “Landmate” as its called in the comic book works.
Basiclly, its just like the Video above describes. The user wears the armor, and the armor mimics the movement of the operator.

Anyway, when can I get my own GUGES-D Landmate please? cause, yeah, this company SARCOS is on the way to producing one.

Cloverfield plot hints?

Cloverfield is the next (or is it the first?) J.J. Abrams film to come out.

In classic Abrams mode, no one really has any fricken clue what its about.
Besides that theres a big monster.
NYC gets thrashed.
Its got some cool style cinematography.
And maybe you want some Slusho with it? … No one is quite sure if thats actually anything to do with the movie, or if Abrams is just fucking with us.

Anyway.
I think I spotted something.

If you go to the Apple Trailers page for the film, and bring up the 720p or 1080p HD trailer, and go to time stamp 00:01:11, and… frame by frame… watch through to 00:01:13… you see something that I would call “WTF!?”

There are three characters behind a plastic sheet in some sort of make-shift military hospital. two of them are in what I think are full body HAZ-MAT mat suits, the inflatable ones that we all know about from fearing the bio-weapons… Anyway two of them in HAZ-MAT suits seem to be helping, supporting, holding back, a 3rd character, seemingly female.

Pay attention to them in the frame by frame, (it goes real quick, so you might miss it at first), and watch the female character that the two HAZ-MAT persons are standing around.

Yeah, WTF was that???!?!

I like data visualizations…

This kind of stuff is just cool.

Computers make it much more interesting to create visual explorations of statistics.

What might start as a boring table of numbers and figures, with some well thought out presentation can come alive with energy and perspective that makes it so much easier to understand and explore. An excellent example of that is something I saw from a TED Conference: The Hans Rosling TED Talk
