I had the time to go up to NYC this weekend and hang out with my brother for a few days. That was a blast, and it was really good to see him. I just thought I’d share some of the cool things I did over the weekend…

I’ll start with the Bizzare + Awesome:
http://revver.com/video/107883/aldo-perez/

This is the best video clip I can find, but its already out of date, and not quite what you need to see to get the Full Effect. Its not at all a good example of the work I’m about to talk about.

Aldo Perez has this “vaudeville-on-crack” performance group called “Renaldo The”. (and some other cand called “Psycho the Clown” which I didn’t see, but and can’t say anything about.

“Renaldo The” though, was one of the funniest and most talented musical-comedy shows I’ve seen in a while. You’ll have to go to “The Living Room” http://www.livingroomny.com/ to see The show.

Take one character, played by Aldo Perez, as an Aristocratic Snob vulgar Asshole, mixed with Jim Carrey and John Waters, who can make his face do amazing things with his expressions. A great guitar player, is able to play a flute with his nose… And as you see in the beginning of the video, has no problems doing weird shit to get a reaction from the crowd.

At first you’d think its just Jim Carrey idiocy… But the real greatness is in the music.
In his retinue, he has his butler.. Who seems to just play the bongo drums, but also makes a lot of great faces, and takes a lot of pleasure in intimidating the audience at some points… Contrasted with the French Maid (remember this is a vaudeville bizarro show) who is fluent in french & german, a trained operatic singer, the clarinet, and has a real sense of comedy and proformance as well. There are too back up musicians, one tuba player, and one synth/piano player who also contribute to the musical/comedy act.

All of this comes togeather in to one of the funniest performances I’ve seen in a while.
Mixing bad renditions of Rap music, jazz, opera, and spanish guitar serenades, hilarious comedy reaching to monty-python, vaudeville, and just some plain ol vulgar raunchyness, the three core players in this group make for a great show that’s just a lot of fun to watch.

http://www.aldoperez.com/ Here’s there absolutely horrible website, which again shows nothing current except for the photo on the front.

Now, for just the plain awesome.
Saturday day I spent 2+ hours at the Guggenheim Museum seeing the current installation of Cai Guo-Qiang’s work.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cai_Guo-Qiang
http://www.guggenheim.org/exhibitions/exhibition_pages/cai.html <– this has video and photos of the current exhibit.

My brother was part of the installation team working for the Guggenheim.
http://alphex.com/shares/ash_cars.jpg <– that’s him in the top left.

The show was, simply, amazing.
The diversity of mediums combine in to an amazing presentation of work that spans the Artists body of work. From full size clay sculptures of chinese farmers; life size wolves, and tigers arranged in flowing flying presentations that are beyond description really, to the cars that are suppoposed to show violence and chaos as car bomb detonation. He practices gun-powder burns on thick paper parchment which create burns and damage to the paper that to me were very powerful and were real great vehicles for the feeling and image he wanted to show. (some of them are over 100 feet tall, 30 feet wide, but the biggest one I saw there was only 30 feet across).

The physical presentation, and arrangement of art was part of the power to me. You weren’t forced to see anything except for what was at your level on the spiral, unless you turned around and saw the cars flipping through the air with their light arrays flashing in sequence.

Totally awesome show, must see, really cool shit.

And my brother is doing really cool things, so thats fun to see.
