baltimore, oh sweet sweet baltimore, that I drove near by to.

My best friend Becca, and her boyfriend Jason live on the out skirts of Baltimore MD, they’ve been bugging me for a while to head down there and hang out for the weekend, so, thats what I did. I was really lucky with the weather.

The ride down was at the last minute, I had spent too much of the day doing other things, helping my mom move a TV, and going to a reunion of sorts at my elementry school. By the time I got home, packed, and on the bike, and on the high way, even at 90mph the whole way down (yes, thats fast, but traffic was doing 75-80… and you’ve got to keep ahead of the current to stay alive), I was at least 30 minutes late. Not to worry. Becca had stayed behind at her and her BF’s place to meet me, and after changing in to something not made to ride a motorcycle we got out the door to go meet some of her friends. (thanks Leah for helping me pick out some nice clothes)

The evening was nice, a low key party at a friends of theirs. Beer, food, some good music, good conversation, and new people. It was really nice to have a new scene, even if its just for one night every so often. I love Philadelphia, but I need to change it up every so often, and the excuse to ride the motorcycle and find a new person to talk to, or a new thing to look at needs to be more of a priority for me.

The next morning, Becca and I ran to the food mart while Jason cooked up some of the basics, after we got back we cooked the eggs and toast we had picked up, and had a nice breakfast followed by nothing but sun, on the front lawn. I can understand why she likes him… Becca’s great at planning and organizing, but getting stuff done doesn’t happen much with her, but with Jason, he just always seems to be doing something.

By 3pm I was needing to head home, and debating the fast return on 95… or finding some back roads.
I ended up taking over 3 hours to get home by turning left, and right as many times as possible. North by North East I cut off of 95 when I left baltimore and wrapped my way around Rt 1, Rt7, and eventually found Rt100, which I’ve heard legend and tale of, but never really did anything with before. Whew, I’ll have to fix that mistake in the future. Rt100 had just been repaved, and was as smooth as butter. Now I know why everyone loves it. Turning Right back on to Rt1 to head back in to philly I passed a bunch of my fellow two wheelers. The connection of the curves of the road is something, as everyone waved to everyone, knowing what the other had just done along the back roads. Like I said, the weather was amazing.

This meme is drying up, though I do have a lot on my mind… Maybe I’ll write some more later.
The weekend was really nice, and I met some really cool people. I guess thats all you can ask for, right?

100 feet closer…

I left Two Wheel Tuesday this evening, and decided I didn’t want to go home, so I did what any self respecting motorcycle owner would do and decided to take the long way home.

Call me boring, but a nice ride out 76 west when its later and theres less traffic, down 476 south, and back up 95 north towards town isn’t such a bad thing. Unless its the night of idiot heads on 4 wheels.

At this location, I’m doing 80-90 behind an SUV which is going about as fast as me… traffic is moving just fine, as I prepare to get out from behind it and pass on the left…
On the right side, I see a big puff of brown dirt get kicked up in to the air, roughly at 2 o’clock (stick your right arm out, straight ahead, and arc it right about 20-30 degrees), as I refocus on the SUV in front of me, it slams on its breaks and SWERVES *WAY* off to the right, safely behind it, I’m able to slow, and as the SUV clears my line of sight, a white, pimped out, lowered, “tricked-out” Honda accord is IN REVERSE, TRAVELING PERPENDICULAR ACROSS THE LANES OF TRAFFIC EXACTLY WHERE I”M MOVING TO.

It’s backing in to the left hand passing lane that I’m aiming for, as I pull down on all my levers and swerve around its tail section missing it by probably less then 3 feet, somehow still in control of my braking and maneuvering I pull in to the median on the left

I am able to get her in neutral and whip my head around to see the Honda burn out as it points its self back in the right direction, and speed off on to 95 North. Traffic behind me is thankfully light, but has built up and I can see people flashing warning lights and can hear honking through my ear plugs.

Ahead of me on the median is a car, and its doors fly open, and I wonder what next… Thankfully its just a car full of young women… who are all freaked out but are more interested in making sure everyone is ok… No, this isn’t where the story ends… After making sure they’re ok, and saying I’m ok, I line up for the highway and clear my approach and take off again.

I catch up to the assholes in the Honda and come up behind them, I can see them waving to each other and bouncing around like the brain dead gene-pool left overs – wearing white tshirts and baseball caps – they are. I pull around to their left and those that look at me are giving me what I can only assume are gang signs and laughing their heads off. So, I flip them off, and take off. They were doing 60-70 at that point, and I’m pretty sure I hit 100 going over the 95 bridge before the stadium. I didn’t see them after that, but I was silently hoping they’d end up on Washington/Delaware avenue with me at a red light so I could put my stand down and smash my helmet in to the face of the first one that said anything.

What I think happened…

These kids must have taken the wrong turn on that ramp, and headed towards 76 west (in my link, the lanes that bend towards the bottom of the image), decided that was dumb, and crossed the dirt patch between the lanes, and somehow lost control trying to re-enter traffic… and ended up going in reverse, perpendicular to the lanes, at 11pm on a Tuesday night, in light fast moving traffic.

it’s a miracle no one was hurt, no one crashed, and that I’m sitting at my computer typing this.

  Glad you are ok. This is probably the main reason Motorcycling (biking?) hasn’t appealed to me as a way to travel on the highway. I totally trust, with the utmost of faith, in the driving abilities of those driving motorcycles. Its the people in the cars that I have never trusted.

I fortunately/unfortunatly live all of 10 blocks from work. As such, its very simple, and a pleasure to walk to and from work. Some people ask me, “Why don’t you ride your bike to work” to which I answer “its kinda silly since it takes as long to get it uncovered and ready as it does for me to even walk there…”

So, 95% of the time, you won’t see me ride the bike to work.

This morning while walking though, I was reminded of the approching spring, as I was passed by a mid 80’s suzuki of some kind, with cafe racer style handle bars, custom slip on exhaust, redone body work, being piloted by what, from my vantage point, I could tell was a rather attractive woman. Wearing the proper garb, the right boots, taking it seriously… Who knows where she was coming from, or where she was going, but its times like that that I kinda wish I lived more then 10 blocks from work, and needed an excuse to get on the bike…

This sunday is going to be the first NICE sunday of the year, and I have a feeling I’ll be spending the whole day on the bike. I guess if I don’t fill the tank up more then twice, I’ll have not taken things far enough

regulator / rectifier, a month or two later…

Well, I’m number 4 on google when you type in vfr750 rectifier so I’d thought I’d give a review of how things have been since my problems a month or two ago.

For all of you who are looking at my post titled More on the 1996 VFR750 Regulator / Rectifier, I can happily tell you that since I installed the unit from http://www.electrosport.com every thing has been working great. Admittedly the weather has cooled down, but I definatly have been treating it as roughly, and some would say even rougher with the cold weather we’re having now.

I rode to and from thanksgiving last night, and let me tell you… if the bike can handle 27 degree’s (at the stop light, I have no idea what the wind chill had it at), I’m sure the battery and the electrical system are doing fine.

So, I give two thumbs up to the .electrosport regulator / rectifier.

I guess I’m lucky that I don’t have to drive it to work, and that I don’t rely on it for anything except fun and adventure, but it’s really a pain in the ass when my bike has an issue. This time the “regulator/rectifier” unit in the electrical system is flaking out.

After reading up at vfrd, which is an amazing resource for VFR owners, I’ve matched up my problems with other riders symptoms. In short, I need a new regulator/rectifier. This device takes electrical current from the alternator and sends it back to the battery for charging, and to the rest of the bike as needed for electrical energy. When it goes, you start powering things on the bike right from the battery, draining it quickly. Yesterday it stalled twice, and both undersituations when I was adding load to the power requirements, a turn signal, and when the air cooling fan kicked in.

Roughly $230 for the part, I’m sure I can replace it on my own, so I’m not worried about that. But for real, couldn’t it have waited two weeks for my first pay check? of course not.

So, unless some kind soul donates to the “fix duran’s bike fund”, I’m on two feet for the next few weeks, instead of two wheels of course.

The real pity is the riding conditions are amazing right now, the air is cool, the wind is nice, the sun is still warm. I wanted to go riding today, I want to go riding this week, and I wanted to go riding next weekend… ugh.

Plenty of things to keep me busy other wise.

if ONE MORE PERSON, driving their huge ass gas guzzling penis enlarging SUV’s, makes a left hand turn from the right hand lane because they need the turning radius WITH OUT USING THEIR FUCKING TURN SIGNALS, I WILL get off my bike, and possibly end up in jail on assault charges.

Coming down Locust street, in the right hand lane, ahead of me is a Land Rover SUV, he moves in to the right lane, with out signaling, and then IMMEDIATLY swings back left and turns in to a parking garage, with out signaling.

I slam down on the breaks, some how NOT locking them, and come so close to hitting him, that it bends back one of my mirrors, which, thank god, are meant to bend if pressure is applied to them.

I just stopped, put my feet down, and stared at him, as he stared back at me through his fucking tinted windows. realizing that nothing had REALLY happened, I drove off, and he went in to the garage.

but by god. mother fucking jesus christ. if I had been one fucking milisecond slower in reacting, I probably would be lying in the back of his SUV, having flown through the window.

I am not a mean person, I am not an angry person, I am not a violent person, but inconsiderate drivers, with vehicles MUCH larger then they have any single need for in the center city area who HAVE to park in parking garages because they can’t find a parallel spot to fit in and then are unable to safly and properly operate their vehicle in a manner that respects the rest of the road, the rest of the people on the road, and THE FUCKING LAWS OF THE ROAD, make me want to break things. and beat people.

It’s one thing for that to happen to me, I let shit slide for the most part, but had someone been on the bike with me, the added weight would have made breaking more difficult, so I may have hit him, I WOULD have gotten off the bike, and had a word. me, sure, my life, my risk, but when someone else is with me, trusting me with their life, and someone ELSE does something to endager us… god, I’ve never been closer to letting loose on someone.

  Mouahaha. That’s horrible and yet, just funny at the same time. I hate SUV’s. Nor do I really like people who drive them. I hate saying that….but I feel if you are a person who drives an suv, then we probably wouldn’t get along.

When stuck in traffic, and wearing a jacket that has a famous NASCAR racer’s number on, LIE TO THE REDNECKS…

Stuck in traffic, a large american Dodge something pulls up to me and the mullet and his wife ask me “Did you see dale at that race the other day?” having NO Idea what he’s talking about, and having not ever watched a NASCAR race ever (I am aware of who Dale is though), I said “no, sorry, don’t watch NASCAR…” oh what a mistake. I swear I heard banjo’s playing in the back ground as the two of them gave me a nasty look and kept rolling through traffic.

On the back of their car I saw the team numbers 3, and 8 on the back of their car with a LARGE NASCAR sticker along side.

I think I need to sell the jacket. $100 perfectly good summer riding jacket, only seen 500 miles of travel. Someone please say they’ll buy it… (it was $160 new).

I think I just spent my partying money, but I just picked up a ICON MERC jacket. It looks like this. And a small tank bag thats good for putting the directions in to a readable format. And this. Body Armor.
It won’t stop any bullets, but it might keep me walking in case I have an accident. The back is much more impressive.

So yeah, I’m good to go.

  I liked the other one, but it was missing some functionality, and the CSS wasn’t that clean.
