some fucking asshole knocked over my bike, part 4

I heard from the insurance agent today.

I can take a payout. which is 50% more then I paid for the bike.

I can refuse the claim, and live with the duct tape until I get the money togeather to fix it… no idea when that will be.

or I can salvage title the bike, get a $1200 check, and then beg for someone to insure it.

    FUCK.
    I love this bike.

some fucking asshole knocked over my bike, part 3

The insurance adjuster looked at my bike today.

I get the REAL numbers on Monday, in an official report, but theres a risk that the bike is totaled, only by cost of the body faring parts, in relation to the list cost of the bike at retail for its age.

I’ll have more real details on Monday. There are a number of options available to me, but I won’t know exactly which one will make the most sense of course, until I get a number / offer from my insurance company.

    *sigh*

some fucking asshole knocked over my bike, part 2

    update on the fun.
I spent yesterday back and forth, just on the phone with the insurance agency. As it turns out, random vandalism, or “fucking assholes being fucking stupid” as I will call it, is covered on my plan. who knew?

There’s a large deductible that I’m facing, but lets look at the numbers…
Take a look at this to see whats hurting (and its only part of the damage also…).

The large panel on the bottom, that has the VFR sticker, alone, new, is about $500.
The upper Cowl where you see the very large crack, is about $400.
There are internal parts, that exist solely to carry the weight of the faring, and keep it in place with the frame. Theres a number of them that are bent, some are $35, others are $200.

Theres a fair number of other things that are banged up as well. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the fucking asshole in question decided to knock my bike over, (after realizing he couldn’t steal it probably) and then jump up and down on it a few times in the process. Its the only way I can explain the bent support rods, and a lot of the other damage.

The deductible is $750 dollars… but after all is said and done, it looks like thats going to be a lot cheaper then the combined cost of all the parts in question.

The next step is to see if the Insurance agency agrees with my assessment, and that they’ll write me a check for a few grand to get everything fixed.

So, in an open letter to fucking assholes everywhere. Fuck you.

    More news as it arrives.

some fucking asshole knocked over my bike.

update: a gallery of the damage.

    oh what a saturday morning.

I had grand plans to SLEEP IN.
soundly wrapped up in the comfy confines of my cotton sheets, as the slow creeping dawn of sunlight crawled through my windows, listening to the rain on the side of the building…. ***BZZZZZZZZT*** wtf.

8AM doorbell, who the hell is that.

I look out the window and see my neighbor Dave, who runs Elite Bicycle pointing over to the left. I shift my gaze, and find my motorcycle lying on its side in the middle of the side walk.

    Awwwhh FUCK.

When parked securely for the night, its chained to a steel pole thats in the ground thats part of a sturdy fence system for the parking lot that I’ve been told I’m not welcome in, even if I pay… So on the side walk my bike stands, on its center stand, chained to the fence poll, fully covered beneath a heavy protective plastic cover designed to cover bikes. Its about as secure as you can make it with out having a private garage. This unfortunatly does not protect it from the assholes and idiots who think its a good idea to try and ride it, or just in general FUCK with it. I doubt this was a legit attempt at steeling it, because if the theif was smart he would have evaluated the situation, and realized he needed an acetealine torch to cut the chain before he tried to move it.

So, some idiot probably jumped on it, even though it was covered, and over it went. popping off the center stand, and falling off its side.

I’m about to go out side and look at it again, but I can tell you right now, the damage is probably in the $400 range.
And that just really fucking makes me pissed off.

So much for that lazy saturday of doing nothing because its saturday and I had nothing to do…
    double pissed off.

    a day at the tracks.

I took off this morning at 8am to meet up with a few of the guys from philadelphiariders.com. On the agenda for the day was a long way around to reach the Pocono Raceway.

About half way there, I stopped to take some pictures…
Like this one…, and and this one…, and This one…, and So on…, and another…, and some more…, Oh wait, another one., I’m not done yet…, almost!, Now I’m done.

    Ok, theres some pics.

Anyway, thats just from one of our pitstops, and then another when we were trying to figure out where we were…

We eventually made it up to the race way where a few of my friends were participating in the track day. It looks like a lot of fun, though its a LOT of work and yet another huge expense in an already expensive hobby. I was impressed with the bikes at the track and the little bit of the racing that I saw… which was actually the biggest problem, I barely saw any racing… for the hour or so that I was there before we headed back I saw two races finish, and 2 get red-flagged down.
The second crash was nasty, or at least it required a medivac to come in and helicoptor out the rider. Somehow he didn’t fasten his helmet strap and then high sided on a corner. Not a good combination.

The route we took up and back was comprised of a lot of back roads that were just simply put a blast to ride. Mostly mid range speeds, 40-60 miles per hour with lots of elevation changes and high degree turns.

Alright, I’m exhausted, I was on the bike for maybe 8+ hours today, leaving at 8am.
    I’ll say something more later.

    calm returns to the world…

well, looks like this is going to be a “normal” day…

New students register today, and not with out a few minor burps here and there, and some non critical bugs cropping up, I’ve been able to relax a bit today, and even *gasp* plan a few things for the week that aren’t involving me being at work till 10pm…

The job’s been crazy stressful the last week or so, but in a rewarding way. I know that I’ve done a good job, even if I needed to put in the extra hours for it. But yeah, things are returning to normal now.

Looking forward to a drink and some food with the “gang” this evening, and being out on the bike for at least just a little while, even if it hot out there…

Lord. Do these guys have ball bearings on their knee pads?

    • duran 8:58 am on June 26, 2006 Permalink

      Kevlar Knee Pads actually.

The pants they wear are a mix of leather and other protective materials, on which the knees are velcro pads, to which the Kevlar and Plastic Knee Pads I linked above are stuck too.

In practice, you don’t touch with your knee, the lean and leg out is for balance more then anything, the fact that you put your knee out is just for the weight displacement… it just happens to be 1 inch off the ground. Knee dragging does happen, but it slows you down, and can throw off your balance.

some how getting older made my life cheaper.

I just looked up something on my insurance policy for the motorcycle… and I realized that my policy renews next month… and because I havn’t had any tickets or accidents, the rate dropped 40%… I turn 28 in a week also… so that helps, 3 cheers for getting old!

I’ll recant all of this when the arthritis starts… don’t you worry.

    She’s back… ignore the sexual inuendo…

I got the bike back today.
She was in the shop for the last few days getting the yearly overhaul, along with new spark plugs, break pads, valve adjustments, replaced filters, replaced fluids, oiled and tightend chain, and a few other tweaks and such. They even cleaned it! She looks almost as good as she feels to ride… Yeah, like I said, ignore the inuendo, I’m not as bad off as it sounds.

I didn’t have much time this evening, but the ride home from the shop was really really nice… The changes from the new parts were well worth the money spent, and I’m eagerly awaiting this summer now that I feel she’s in perfect shape for some longer rides. My fathers agreed to lend me a single person tent if I need it to go anywhere, so I’m hoping to make some road trips up to the mountains as well as to the beach when ever I can.

The guys at Philly Cycle Center, at 2450 Castor Avenue did a good job, and were really polite and friendly. Now if they’d just move to south philly I’d be able to walk to and from them instead of hitching a ride from a good friend when this comes up… Which, actually, I hope isn’t a regular event at all, but its good that they’re there.

Next week I’m finally going to replace the body panels that are fucked up… Final touches to make it look as good as it should.

not sure if thats how you spell it, oh well…

Lets see… Tonight a friend from out of town is showing up for the events of tomorrow…
    I have a date this evening…
and tomorrow is Joe’s bachlor party…

Actually, thats all I can talk about, since I have to keep some of the details of that under wraps… but look for a non-incriminating write up when I recover saturday morning…

    What else is going on…
Bike’s in the shop for the yearly workover… valves, oil, filters, fluids, etc…
I’ll probably get it back on tuesday, or wednesday… hopefully tuesday ;)

Got to give another shout out to Leah for helping me out thursday with picking me up from the Honda repair shop. I’m glad I’m not stuck in north philly ;)

Alright, back to the grind stone… At least its friday!
